Author to discuss ‘Pornography of Everyday Life’
    By Stacy Moeller
    Sep 18, 2006

Dr. Jane Caputi will give a talk, “The Pornography of Everyday Life,” Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. in the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women.

She defines pornography as the “sexualized domination and objectification of women and others put in the role of women” and claims it is a mainstream worldview, supporting not only sexism, but also racism, militarism and environmental destruction.

Caputi teaches women’s studies at Florida Atlantic University and is the author of the award-winning The Age of Sex Crimes, a feminist critique of the heroization of the serial killer. Her latest book, Goddesses and Monsters: Women, Myth, Power and Popular Culture, is a collection of her essays.

“Dr. Caputi has been an inspiration to generations of college women and to scholars who confront issues of violence against women,” said Dr. Patricia Murphy, interim director of the Center for Women.

Deeply committed to teaching and her students, Caputi was named the Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2001, given the 2004 Degree of Difference Award by the FAU Alumni Association, and in 2005 was named Researcher of the Year for Scholarly and Creative Activities.

The free lecture is sponsored by the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. It will take place in the Jane Eberly Eager Conference Room in Tucker Hall 180.

For more information, contact the Center for Women at 419.530.8570.
