Author to talk about life as child soldier
    By Alissa Hammond
    Oct 10, 2007

    Beah
Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone, which details his life as a child soldier in Sierra Leone, will visit UT Thursday, Oct. 11, on Main Campus.

He was recruited to fight as a child solider when he was 13 after the outbreak of a civil war and the death of his family in Sierra Leone.

Beah’s visit is in conjunction with UT’s First Read Program, sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement and the Dean of Students Office. This program brings incoming students together to provide a common reading experience that will introduce them to a part of their academic life while developing a strong sense of community with their fellow students, faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom. Copies of A Long Way Gone were given out at the new student convocation.

“Perhaps all that need be said about Beah’s skill as a storyteller is that while we know how he made it out — the book in our hands is proof of that — we are glued to every page by the very real possibility that this story is not going to end happily … Read his memoir and you will be haunted … It’s a high price to pay, but it’s worth it,” according to a Newsweek review of Beah’s book.

Different programs will be offered Thursday, Oct. 11, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The schedule:

    • Book Discussion, 2:30 to 4 p.m., Student Union Auditorium
Students will be divided into small discussion groups. These interactive discussions will be facilitated by UT faculty and staff.

    • An Evening with Ishmael Beah, 7-9 p.m., Student Union Auditorium
