The Autism Society of Northwest Ohio will hold a workshop on autism risk and safety Saturday, May 5, at The University of Toledo Medical Center, Health Education Building Room 100 on the Health Science Campus.
Safety is a huge concern for parents and family members of an individual with autism. This workshop is designed to identify issues of risk and provide strategies that help parents and caregivers manage these risks at home, school and in the community.
Guest speaker Dennis Debbaudt, author of Avoiding Unfortunate Situations, the first book to address the interactions between law enforcement professionals and people with autism, will talk about these concerns and many more. Debbaudt is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association, the Law Enforcement Video Association and the Autism Society of America.
Other issues that will be addressed include autism spectrum risk awareness and management, wandering, safe travel, alerting neighbors, and school support networks for spectrum students.
Check in is at 8:30 a.m. with a presentation from 9 a.m. to noon. Continental breakfast will be served.
The workshop is free to members of the Autism Society of Northwest Ohio, and $5 in advance for others. The deadline for pre-registration is Wednesday, May 2.
