The University of Toledo’s first Safety Awareness Week will take place Monday through Friday, Sept. 8-12.
Events are designed to raise awareness about safety and security on campus.
According to Jo Campbell, director of residence life, it is important to think about major events such as Virginia Tech and understand that anything could happen. Significant financial investments have been made to protect UT’s campuses, and all students should be aware of the safety features available to them, she said.
Safety is a priority for any campus, Campbell said, adding the biggest problem at UT is theft. Campbell talked about methods such as placing slips under unlocked doors in residence halls that say “Thanks for the computer! If I were a thief, right now I would be thanking you. Lock your doors and protect your belongings,” to show students that it only takes a few minutes for someone to come in and take things.
In the dining halls on Main Campus, students will be able to participate in self-defense classes, sign up for UT Alert, watch a safety video, ask questions and talk with UT Police officers, and have valuables engraved.
Listed by date, these events will take place:
• Monday, Sept. 8, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center;
• Tuesday, Sept. 9, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the International House Dining Hall;
• Wednesday, Sept. 10, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Parks Tower Dining Hall;
• Thursday, Sept. 11, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Ottawa House East Dining Hall; and
• Friday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Student Union South Dining Lounge.
