Nearly 200 UT pharmacy students will gather in Nitschke Hall Auditorium on Main Campus for the College of Pharmacy’s annual professional advancement ceremony Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m.
The ceremony will honor 108 doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) and 81 bachelor of science in pharmaceutical sciences (BSPS) students admitted into the third year of courses known as the professional division. To reach the professional division, students must successfully complete two years of course work in general studies and the sciences and go through a rigorous application and interview process.
Dr. Johnnie L. Early II, dean of the College of Pharmacy, and faculty members will present each BSPS student with a leather portfolio, compliments of CVS/pharmacy, after which the students will take an oath to abide by the Code of Ethics for Scientists. BSPS students represent the fields of medicinal and biological chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology/toxicology and pharmacy administration, all of which are experiencing shortages of professionals in Ohio and nationwide.
During the white-coat portion of the ceremony, the dean and faculty will present white lab coats to each third-year PharmD student, as well as BSPS students majoring in medicinal and biological chemistry, pharmaceutics and pharmacology/toxicology. The white lab coats and name badges are provided in part by CVS/pharmacy. A member of the UT pharmacy faculty will lead the PharmD students in reciting the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists.
“This event marks a milestone in the students’ education as they transition from the study of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences to practicing their trades,” Early said.
Each BSPS and PharmD student will receive
Stedman’s Medical Dictionary and the
Goodman & Gilman Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, books that will assist them in their professional studies.
