One of the oldest and most fondly remembered buildings on The University of Toledo’s Main Campus will be open for self-guided tours Saturday, Oct. 4, following the Homecoming Parade.
The parade will start at 2 p.m.; the Field House will be open until 6:30 p.m.
In its years as the University’s most prominent extracurricular location, The University of Toledo’s Memorial Field House hosted concerts by Simon & Garfunkel and Jimi Hendrix, talks by anthropologist Margaret Mead and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, Rocket basketball games featuring future NBA star Steve Mix, and the first-ever Holiday on Ice production Christmas Day in 1943.
Although there isn’t an accurate number, anecdotes from alumni suggest many lifelong friendships and even marriages were launched at the Field House.

Sal Murslovic of Michielutti Brothers Inc. of Eastpointe, Mich., installed a terrazzo floor in the Memorial Field House. |
Now, after years of dormancy, the renovated building soon will reclaim its pivotal place in the life of UT students as home to 54 state-of-the-art classrooms, 70 faculty offices, a 250-seat auditorium, and an educational incubator to develop innovative teaching methods.
The building’s $27 million, 145,000-square-foot renovation will open for classes in January and house the departments of English and Foreign Languages.
“We will have historic photos on display throughout the Field House, and as people tour the building they will be able to watch a great video about its history,” said Matt Lockwood, director of public relations.
Free Memorial Field House T-shirts will be available while supplies last.
