Science, technology expo set for May 6-7
    By Jim Winkler
    May 5, 2008

Talks by scientists at some of the nation’s leading life-sciences and biotechnology firms will highlight the second Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology Science and Technology Expo that will be held Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7, in Health Education Building Room 227 on the Health Science Campus.

Among the firms that will be represented at the free event will be California-based Fluxion Biosciences, which specializes in research tools for live-cell image analysis in drug discovery; PerkinElmer Inc, a Massachusetts firm that offers an array of life-sciences instruments and services; and Integrated DNA Technologies Inc., an Iowa-based supplier of cutting-edge chemical compounds called oligonucleotides that are used in research.

Talks are planned on topics such as de novo gene synthesis, advances in functional assays using cell imaging and laminar flow, immunoassays, magnetic cell isolation and digital imaging.

“This event brings the latest technological advances from a variety of disciplines to our University,” said Dr. Randall Worth, assistant professor of medical microbiology and immunology. “Many of these technologies have only recently gone on the market and others are still in the testing phase of development. Being able to see and test these innovative devices allows us to think progressively toward new ways of approaching the science taking place in our laboratories and is another way to stay at the leading edge of research.”

Fourteen companies also will have displays of their services and products.

President Lloyd Jacobs is scheduled to give remarks at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Greg Knudson, from the Regional Growth Partnership, will give a talk at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday on starting a biotechnology company.

Scientific demonstrations and tours of Health Science Campus core laboratories are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

    No registration is required.
