The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology will hold a workshop on infection and immunity Friday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Hilton Toledo on Health Science Campus.
The event is open to undergraduate students and faculty advisers and will include research presentations on bacteriology, virology and immunology. Graduate students may apply, but their acceptance will depend on space availability, according to Dr. Isabel Novella, associate professor of medical microbiology and immunology.
The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Sept. 23, and students whose research has been accepted will be notified by Tuesday, Sept. 30. There is no registration fee, and all costs except travel will be covered, including meals for all participants and overnight accommodation for those living more than one-hour driving distance from Toledo.
Attendance is limited. To apply, fill one of the faculty or student forms found on the 2008 work link on the department’s home page at http://hsc.utoledo.edu/depts/micro/index.html and email it to sharon.ellard@utoledo.edu.
The workshop starts Friday with registration between 5 and 8 p.m. followed by a social hour and dinner. Registration on Saturday is from 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Scientific sessions will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Speakers will include Dr. W. Ian Lipkin, professor of epidemiology in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and director of both the Laboratory for Immunopathogenesis and Infectious Diseases, and the Center for Developmental Neuroscience; and Dr. Frank DeLeo, acting chief of the Laboratory of Human Bacterial Pathogenesis and chief of the Pathogen-Host Cell Biology Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Also scheduled to speak are Dr. Yong-Jun Liu, the Vivian L. Smith Distinguished Chair in Immunology and Professor and director of the Center for Cancer Immunology Research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. Robert Blumenthal, professor of medical microbiology and immunology at The University of Toledo.
Questions can be directed to isabel.novella@utoledo.edu.
