UT doctoral degrees combine clinical, academic expertise
    By Jon Strunk
    Oct 26, 2007

The collaboration of the departments of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, and Health and Rehabilitative Services resulting in PhD/DPT and PhD/OTD degrees is notable as it represents the most recent example of how The University of Toledo is fulfilling the transformative collaboration promised following the merger with the Medical University of Ohio.

The departments of Kinesiology and Health and Rehabilitative Services are pairing with the departments of Physical and Occupational Therapy to enable students to simultaneously pursue clinical and academic doctoral degrees.

“We’re facing a critical shortage of PhD-trained physical therapists and these new PhD/DPT programs will help ensure there are enough faculty with both clinical as well as academic and research skills to treat tomorrow’s patients and continue the advancement of the field’s knowledge base,” said Dr. Charles Armstrong, chair of the Department of Kinesiology.

Celebrating the new PhD/DPT Program and in recognition of National Physical Therapy Month, UT will host an event Monday, Oct. 29, at 8:30 a.m. in the Health and Human Services Building Multipurpose Room on Main Campus with keynote speaker Dr. Janet R. Bezner, senior vice president of the Division of Education of the American Physical Therapy Association.

“These PhD/DPT degrees are really a testament to the expertise that exists at The University of Toledo,” said Dr. Clayton Holmes, chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. “There are very few institutions that offer this combination as most universities don’t have the variety of resources needed to offer this type of comprehensive degree.”

“The formation of the new College of Health Science and Human Service from the former College of Health Sciences and the College of Health and Human Services was a strategic move for the continued strength of The University of Toledo,” said Interim Dean Margaret Traband, “and due to the synergy developed, we will strengthen the professions of physical therapy and occupational therapy with these new programs.”
