Last month Deb Engstrom found herself flying in a CH-47 Chinook military helicopter and shooting an M-16, not a typical day for a pathology lab supervisor.
Engstrom was nominated by Rebecca Meyer, a lab technician who is a member of the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, to participate in an employer outreach program called the Boss Lift.
The program was designed to educate employers about the Ohio Air National Guard mission and show appreciation for their patriotism by supporting the military.
During the Boss Lift, Engstrom toured the hangar of an F-16 military fighter aircraft. She then was flown by a Chinook helicopter to Camp Perry near Port Clinton.
When arriving at Camp Perry, she was served lunch — a sloppy joe MRE (meal ready to eat), which is a self-contained ration that service members eat while in combat or other field conditions where food facilities are not available. After lunch, Engstrom received hands-on target training with an M-16 military rifle replica.
Engstrom’s favorite part of the program was riding in the Chinook to Camp Perry because the back “hatch” of the aircraft was open. “It was a thrill,” she said.
The Ohio Air National Guard requires one weekend a month and an additional two weeks every year of military duty, according to Meyer.
“Deb goes out of her way to rearrange the schedule for me,” Meyer said. “She is very understanding of my commitment to the military. She was highly supportive, even when I was called in at short notice.”
Engstrom was excited to participate in the program. “I was honored that Rebecca nominated me and felt that I respected her needs,” she said.
