    College of Arts and Sciences reaches out with new advisory board
    By Staff
    Jan 3, 2008

    The College of Arts and Sciences recently held its first College Advisory Board meeting on Main Campus.

    Local attorney Jon Richardson, left, talked with Dr. Yueh-Ting Lee, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Nina McClelland, UT alumna, following the first meeting of the College Advisory Board.
    This board consists of 18 alumni and donors, as well as community and business leaders from Ohio and Michigan.

    What do these board members do? Dr. Yueh-Ting Lee, dean of the college, plans to meet with members to hear counsel and advice for the college in the winter, spring, summer and fall. Lee said the group helps advance University and college strategic goals and initiatives through consultation, advocacy, outreach and support.

    Specifically, the primary purposes and responsibilities for the advisory board include:

    • Promoting the college’s positive image and academic excellence in liberal education;

    • Increasing external resources by helping with fund raising, seeking grants and building partnerships; and

    • Connecting the college with the communities, particularly with Arts and Sciences alumni and community friends, and making new friends to expand networks of support for students and programs within the college.

    On behalf of President Lloyd Jacobs and the University, Dr. Rosemary Haggett, Main Campus provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, welcomed the board members at their first meeting and thanked them for their support of the College of Arts and Sciences and The University of Toledo.

    Lee then presented general information, including the college’s mission and vision, and distributed copies of the recently developed college strategic plan to all board members.

    Dr. Nina McClelland, an alumna from the Department of Chemistry and former president and CEO of National Sanitation Foundation in Ann Arbor, Mich., who now has a consulting business, and Michael S. Miller, an alumnus from the Department of Communication and editor of the Toledo Free Press, were elected board chair and board secretary, respectively.
