    Employees Recognized for Excellence
    By Vicki L. Kroll
    Oct 19, 2004

Six employees were honored last week at the University’s 2004 Outstanding Staff Awards Ceremony and Luncheon.

“The people we are recognizing are known for the quality of service they give to the campus, our students and colleagues. They are known as ‘good people’ who really care for UT and their work,” President Dan Johnson told some 400 employees who attended the program. “We want you and the campus to know how much we appreciate you and all you bring to UT.”

A total of 57 people were nominated. Each of the six winners received a plaque and a check for $1,500.

Award recipients from the Communication Workers of America Local 4530 and the UT Police Patrolman’s Association were:

    Terry Fell
    • Terry Fell, computer graphics design artist in Audio-Visual Services. He has worked at UT for 21 years. “Terry is always experimenting with different films, lenses, filters and cameras to give the University creative, better quality photography,” wrote one nominator. “Terry bleeds blue and gold when it comes to UT sports. Anyone who knows Terry knows that the team closest to his heart is the Toledo women’s basketball team. He has been their ‘number one fan.’” Another noted, “He is a person that one can always count on to do you a favor, to do it well, and to agree to help without any question. His tireless efforts to do his job well have made UT a better place.”

    Billie Ogrodowski
    • Billie Ogrodowski, administrative secretary 2 in the Alumni Relations Office. She started her UT career as a secretary in the geology department in 1982. After taking a leave of absence in 1987, she returned in 1990 and joined the Alumni Office. “What separates Billie from anyone else is the additional responsibility that she has assumed simply to help move the Alumni Office and the University forward. Since its inception in the 1990s, Billie has served as the sole staff coordinator of the UT Retirees Association. Another group she helped start and has continued to maintain since the 1990s is the Golden Alumni Society,” wrote one nominator. “Billie is the most loyal and committed person I have worked with during a 25-year career.”

    Cheryl Thomas
    • Cheryl Thomas, secretary, Study Abroad Office and First-Year Experience Program. She has worked at the University for eight years. “In the context of her work with First-Year Experience, Cheryl works with great energy and enthusiasm, and projects a warm and caring presence to the many students in which she comes into contact. She is a superb representative of the ‘student-centered’ approach to which we all should aspire,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “She often is the sole contact from UT with study abroad students while they are overseas. She is a great ambassador and liaison for the international academic world. She has assisted and been right there for students pursuing an opportunity of a lifetime. Her relationships with students are lifelong.”

Winners from the Professional Staff Association were:

    Kathy Bielski
    • Kathy Bielski, senior business manager in Enrollment Services. She has worked at UT since 1987 in several colleges and joined Enrollment Services in 1999. “Kathy shows her commitment each day by the quality of her work. You can always count on her to be efficient and juggle many projects at the same time. She has a great sense of humor with timing that gives levity to difficult tasks at hand,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “Affectionately known as BQ (budget queen), she has been instrumental in helping to keep staff focused and optimistic during budget shortfalls and has worked diligently with leaders of each area of the division to find means within their individual budgets to fulfill their goals.”

    Randy Sanner
    • Randy Sanner, hall operations manager in the Academic House and the International House. He began working for the Office of Residence Life in 1996. “One of Randy’s greatest skills is his ability to work with people. His custodians love working for him and he provides them with not only clear direction, but he visibly supports and appreciates their efforts. He also has a great style of working with students — he anticipates their needs and meets them,” wrote one nominator. Another noted, “It’s obvious Randy enjoys the University community and his job. Having a boss that shows appreciation to those of us who work under him is so important. Randy shows such a love of life and his family that it can be contagious.”

    Christine Smallman
    • Christine Smallman, director of college relations and facilities management in the College of Engineering. She has worked at UT since 1986, joining the College of Engineering in 1988. “Many of the positive things that happen in the College of Engineering and that make it a vibrant, fun place to work and learn for students, faculty and staff are touched or influenced by Chris’ hand,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “Chris was primarily responsible for launching the Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Senior Design Clinic — a capstone industry-University partnership program for the benefit of our students — in 1998. After six years of excellent growth, this is a great, visible and valued component of our engagement with the community, clearly aligned with our scholarship and educational missions.”
