Six employees were honored last week at the University’s 2003 Outstanding Staff Awards Ceremony and Luncheon.
“We are recognizing … those among us who are known for the excellence of their work and the quality of their service,” President Dan Johnson told some 450 employees who attended the program. “I want you to know how much I and the entire campus appreciate you, your work, and your commitment to excellence and service.”
A total of 54 employees were nominated. Each of the six winners received an engraved plaque and a check for $1,500.
Award recipients from the Communications Workers of America Local 4530 and the UT Police Patrolman’s Association were:
 |
| Chet Morran |
• Chet Morran, custodial worker in the Academic House. He has been working at UT since 1995. “His positive attitude toward his job responsibilities is always present. He greets all students with ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon,’” wrote one nominator. “Chet Morran is well liked by his co-workers, students and management. He will take on every task that is placed in front of him.” Another noted, “Chet has a great sense of humor and jokes around with even the grumpy residents until he gets them to smile.” Another wrote, “The residents always see his smile or hear him whistling. Chet makes it a point to attempt to learn the residents’ names and greets them as he walks the building.”

| Sandy Dunbar |
• Sandy Dunbar, secretary in the foundations of education department. She has been a staff member at the University for 16 years. “Sandy is the hub of the department. She makes things run with great efficiency, insight and effectiveness. Sandy has given sustained and highly significant service. She is a creative problem-solver,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “I have rarely seen anyone so consistent in hospitality, efficiency, problem-solving and more.” Another noted, “Sandy sets the tone for a friendly, concerned University atmosphere. She demonstrates true caring about colleagues and students. Our mission is fair and inclusive education for all — Sandy exemplifies the staff member committed to being fair, inclusive and kind.”

| Barb Scouten |
• Barb Scouten, secretary in the management department. She has worked in several departments on campus for more than 30 years. “She is a wonderful customer servant to our students, and she is the consummate professional,” wrote one nominator. Another wrote, “She is very well versed in the technological advantages of the University and is able to help faculty put together slides, presentations, course needs and is able to provide materials with little or no budget resources.” Another noted, “Her presence, more than anyone else’s, makes this a truly great place for teachers to teach and students to learn.” Scouten is a past recipient of the Outstanding Women Award, which is presented by the University Women’s Commission.
Winners from the Professional Staff Association were:
 |
| Wayne Gates |
• Wayne Gates, assistant vice president of student affairs/residence life. He has worked at UT for 28 years. “He has been a driving force in the forecasting of need, design and construction, and opening of residence halls on campus. The residence halls have been planned to meet the needs of differing students living on campus, a thoughtful process that mandates both being up-to-date on the state-of-the-art in campus housing and how to effectively communicate/advocate for our current and future students’ housing needs,” wrote one nominator. “Wayne is a student-centered, calm, articulate, talented, respected University and community leader. He leads by example; his values are evident in the way he lives his daily life.”
 |
| Al Liby |
• Al Liby, desktop support specialist in the College of Arts and Sciences. He began working at the University in 1997. “Al’s commitment to the University and its employees is exemplary. He is very helpful and knowledgeable with solving hardware and software problems. He never leaves his customers in distress or without some glimmer of hope when it comes to computer needs,” wrote one nominator. “Al’s positive attitude, no matter what the virus might be, is an example for us all.” Another noted, “Al performs his duties in a most admirable manner and when his services are requested, his positive and helpful attitude is noticeably optimistic. The administrators and staff speak very highly of and with great respect for Al Liby.”
 |
| Tom Trimble |
• Tom Trimble, associate director of student unions. He has worked at UT for 25 years. “Tom is responsible for renovation projects in the Student Union and Scott Park Student Center. He is thorough in his research and preparation of these projects. He takes great pride in the appearance of the buildings,” wrote one nominator. Another noted, “I understand why Tom is the first person everyone goes to when they have a technical problem or they need a door opened or a lock is jammed or their e-mail won’t work. I don’t believe I have ever heard Tom say ‘no’ to someone. Tom is a fantastic teacher to everyone he comes in contact with, but he also listens and learns from others.”
