Amigo, freund, ami — in any language, a friend is someone who is there to listen to you, to spend time with and to help you. Officials in the Office of Residence Life are looking for a few good men and women who fit this bill for their Faculty Friends Program.
The Faculty Friends Program brings together students and faculty members outside the classroom, according to Tamara Clark, assistant director for residential education. "We want faculty to learn about students and vice versa," she said.
Faculty members who are accepted to the program are assigned to one of the residence halls on campus to participate in hall activities and to get to know students and staff. Faculty friends are expected to be available to students for academic assistance and advising, to attend two hall staff meetings a semester, to have meals biweekly with students and staff in a dining hall, and to be an advocate for students living in the hall.
The program includes two means of financial support. Each team will have $300 or $500 a person depending on residence hall to fund program activities. Each faculty friend will receive dining passes to use while eating with students. The maximum dining for each person is one lunch and one dinner for 15 weeks.
