Golf coach tries to make green for team trip
    By Liene Dekere
    Apr 8, 2008

While traveling around the country, UT Women’s Head Golf Coach Nicole Hollingsworth noticed that most golf teams have golf club head covers with the mascots of their schools.

UT Women’s Head Golf Coach Nicole Hollingsworth shows off the new Rocket golf club headcover.
Inspired, Hollingsworth decided to design Rocket golf club head covers to raise money for the Rockets to travel to Hawaii in fall 2009.

“I wanted my players to have a head cover with our mascot that they would be proud to put on their golf bag,” Hollingsworth said.

As with any fundraising project, there were several challenges.

“In my research, 99 percent of the schools and their mascots are animals or people, which helps in making head covers. We happen to be an object, which is a lot harder,” Hollingsworth said.

Hollingsworth went through many designs from artists and then many prototypes to get the look she wanted before selecting the final model.

UT’s official golf head covers are available for purchase for $30 (including tax).

“It looks like our mascot and we should be proud of that and put it on our golf bags to show our support of The University of Toledo,” Hollingsworth said.

The reaction, according to Hollingsworth, has been unbelievable. Her original goal was to sell 900 covers to raise money for the team to travel to Hawaii, but now that she has already gone through her first shipment of 300 within the first week of fundraising, Hollingsworth is thinking big.

She said the success is in part due to local golf courses that have supported the fundraiser by selling the club covers and giving the profit back to UT.

The local golf clubs selling the covers are Highland Meadows Golf Club, Inverness Club, Maumee Sportsmall, South Toledo Golf Club, Stone Oak Country Club, Sylvania Country Club and Toledo Country Club.

The head covers also can be purchased directly from the women’s golf office at 419.530.7761 — leave a message if no one answers — or e-mail Hollingsworth at nicole.hollingsworth@utoledo.edu.
