“Church in the African-American community is the foundation and ministers are master communicators,” said Dr. Abdul Alkalimat, University of Toledo’s director of Africana studies. “We can use the church as a way to bring the people on the other side of the digital divide to this side of the information society through the Cyber Church.”
Alkalimat and his team of students are launching an online church community through the Cyber Church Friday, Aug. 30. The Web site includes links to nearly 250 area church Web sites and oral histories about the churches. “Our goal is to get every church online via a common portal, all faiths, as a virtual ecumenical environment for Black liberation theology. Our vision is a virtual black community,” said Alkalimat.
According to the Rev. Albert Reed of First Antioch, “It’s going to improve our communication – that’s the bottom line. Cyber Church will help us communicate across racial and cultural lines. We can use these Web sites to communicate about the social ills that still exist and rally as a community.”
The Cyber Church Web site is www.blacktoledo.net/religion.
