Jami Recker, infant teacher at Apple Tree Nursery School Inc., received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the Toledo Association for the Education of Young Children.
Kari Bonnell, a senior in the College of Education who works at Apple Tree, nominated Recker for the honor. In her letter of recommendation, Bonnell described Recker as a star, writing that she “emits radiant energy.” Bonnell added, “It is amazing how she can come into work five times a week and have the same amount of energy day in and day out. She never appears frustrated, tired or in need of a break. Jami lives to love and nurture the children in her room, and her child-like energy is what draws the children to her.”
Each nominee was scored on the nomination letter, philosophy statement, certifications, professional activities, experience in the education field, educational background, an observation of the nominee in the classroom, and a short interview.
Recker was presented with a plaque at the Shining Star Recognition Event, which was held this spring at the Pinnacle in Maumee.
“Jami’s award is quite an honor to the center,” said Lisa Poggi, director of Apple Tree. “Just the nomination itself provides a sense of pride and reassurance to the families enrolled at the center, specifically in the infant suite. The fact that the center is able to attract and retain high-quality teachers like Jami speaks to the exceptional level of teaching and care-giving we provide.”
“I enjoy every part about working with infants and children in general. It is amazing to see them learn and grow each day,” Recker said. “The infant years are so important for so many areas of growth that I really love to see the social interactions between the children and how they respond to the many activities and experiences we plan for them on a daily basis. I love to see their faces when they try something new!”
