Appropriate Celebrations Sought for Homecoming Game
    By PR Staff
    Oct 6, 2003

There are some new initiatives that will become visible when The University of Toledo Rockets host the Eastern Michigan Eagles during the Oct. 11 Homecoming game at the Glass Bowl. The efforts follow the post-game celebration on Sept. 20.

“The Incident Review Team, established by President Johnson following the Pittsburgh game, has been working to find ways to immediately ensure that spectators at all UT athletic events behave appropriately,” said Tobin Klinger, interim executive director of public relations and marketing.

According to Klinger, representatives from the Division of Student Life have been working with various student groups to help them understand the need to act responsibly at such events. Additionally, this need will be communicated to all in attendance over the course of the game via the scoreboard.

“We want the fans to know that we still encourage them to celebrate,” Klinger said. “It is just that such celebrations need to happen in appropriate ways.”

At the game, fans also can expect to see increased event staffing on the field. In addition, work is under way to incorporate the Rocket football team and the UT Marching Band into post-game celebrations in ways that encourage spectators to remain in the stands.

“There are a number of exciting new things that can be implemented that would capture the crowd’s passion and enthusiasm, without leading to on-field celebration,” Klinger said.
