Associate professor named National Council for Science and the Environment fellow
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Jun 18, 2008

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) has tapped the expertise of a faculty member at The University of Toledo to help shape environmental education materials during the coming year.

Dr. Andy Jorgensen in the classroom
NCSE announced today the appointment of Dr. Andy Jorgensen, associate professor and director of general chemistry, as Senior Fellow at the Council for 2008-9 during his sabbatical leave from the University. He will work with NCSE on the organization’s Earth Portal and with its Council of Environmental Deans and Directors. A major emphasis of his work will be the development of global climate change curricular materials and educational standards.

Jorgensen joined the UT faculty in the Department of Chemistry in 1988. During his tenure at UT, Jorgensen has served as chair of Faculty Senate, associate chair of the Department of Chemistry, and he oversaw the University’s conversion from the quarter system to semesters.

Since earning his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1976, Jorgensen has held posts at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau, France (sabbatical leave appointment), the University of Southern Indiana and the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (sabbatical leave appointment).

His many honors include a designation as an Outstanding University Teacher, Master Teacher in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Dean’s Merit Award and a nomination for Professor of the Year. In 2007, he received the University-wide Student Centeredness Award.

NCSE is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the scientific basis for environmental decision-making. The Council specializes in programs that foster collaboration between diverse institutions, communities and individuals.
