Associate professor of business technology receives statewide award

Joy Dougherty, UT associate professor of business technology in University College, received the Post-Secondary Business Technology Educator of the Year Distinguished Service Award for 2004 at the annual conference of the Ohio Business Teachers Association (OBTA) in October.

Dougherty has worked at UT for 18 years, primarily teaching Microsoft program courses such as Excel and PowerPoint. She also has developed a course to prepare students for Microsoft Office user specialist professional certification and volunteers at Sunshine Inc. to teach staff how to use various computer programs. Dougherty has been a member of OBTA for five years.

Dr. Rose Kuceyeski, Owens Community College computer information systems/office administration professor, nominated Dougherty for the award. Recipients must demonstrate outstanding contributions to business technology education through teaching, participation in professional associations, publication of articles or research activities, and contributions to business technology education in civic, religious, government, cultural or private business organizations.

“I knew about it ahead of time and had to fill out some papers for the award,” Dougherty said. “I felt honored and thrilled to be nominated.” She turned in her forms, but didn’t hear anything back from the organization for several weeks. “I thought that I didn’t get it.” But word came in October that she had won.

At the OBTA conference in West Chester, Ohio, Dougherty was presented with a plaque and a poster showcasing signatures of all the attendees.

While professional recognition is gratifying, Dougherty receives just as much satisfaction from teaching. “Students come first,” she said. “It’s so rewarding when you see the lights come on.”
