RE: Academic Accommodations for Students Affected by Fire at University Circle Apartments

On Saturday, November 16, there was a serious fire at the University Circle Apartments, a privately owned off-campus complex on Dorr St. Fortunately no one was injured, but some 250 students have been displaced. About half are expected to be able to return to their apartments today. However, approximately 70 students will not be able to reoccupy their units for the rest of the semester. Another 40 to 50 lived in units that were completely destroyed. The University and the American Red Cross worked through the weekend to meet their needs for shelter, food, clothing, transportation, medical aid and security.

I am writing to ask all faculty members to provide reasonable academic accommodations to students who were affected by the fire. Many have lost their textbooks and class materials as well as their personal belongings, and will most certainly need some assistance in rebuilding their academic agendas. In support of this effort, my office in collaboration with Harvey Wolff, president of UT-AAUP, and Gerald Sherman, Faculty Senate chairman, is forming a task force to help faculty and students address academic issues related to the fire. I am asking each dean to appoint a member of his or her college to serve on this task force as well as to function as a contact person for students who have been impacted by the fire. A list of these appointments will be posted on the UT web site shortly.

Rest assured that any assistance you are able to give to the students who were affected by this tragedy will be greatly appreciated.
