University of Toledo President Dan Johnson announced today that Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe has been selected as vice president of student affairs.
Bledsoe will come to the University from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, where he serves as associate dean and assistant professor of educational leadership and counseling. Nationally recognized for his research, publications and presentations in the student affairs profession, his primary areas of expertise involve developmental interventions, student leadership development, human development theories and diversity issues.
In 1990, Bledsoe founded the Student African-American Brotherhood, a national organization established to enhance the experiences of African-American males in colleges and universities around the country. He holds a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree in education from Mississippi State University. He also earned a Ph.D. in the field of counseling and student personnel administration from the University of Georgia in Athens and was chosen as the Outstanding Doctoral Student in the state.
In addition to his work at Sam Houston State University, Bledsoe has served as vice president and dean of student life at North Carolina Wesleyan College, Rocky Mount; vice president of enrollment and student services at North Carolina Wesleyan College; associate vice chancellor of student affairs, North Carolina Central University, Durham; and associate dean of students at Georgia Southwestern College, Americus.
Bledsoe is also a nationally recognized motivational speaker and a contributing author to the forthcoming book African American Men in College, to be published by Jossey-Bass, San Francisco.
According to Johnson, Bledsoe’s expertise in student affairs is what made him the top candidate for the position. “We are proud Dr. Bledsoe has decided to join The University of Toledo. His 19 years of experience and many accomplishments made him the ideal choice.”
Johnson added, “I thank Dean Jerome Sullivan and the search committee for their hard work, their attitude of openness, and for making this a difficult decision by delivering such a strong pool of candidates.”
Bledsoe said he is extremely excited about the invitation to join UT. “It is an excellent opportunity for my family and me, and I'm personally and professionally grateful. I look forward to working with all constituents to realize continued success for The University of Toledo.”
“I'm committed to working with the executive staff along with exhaustive efforts to position the Division of Student Affairs as a model for practitioners and others nationally and internationally," added Bledsoe.
Bledsoe, 41, will start on June 1 and will earn $145,000 annually.
