Board Approves Harassment Policy; Procedure Outlined
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Dec 7, 2004

On the heels of the approval of an unlawful harassment policy by The University of Toledo board of trustees, the administration has defined the procedures for reporting harassment of any member of the campus community, as well as the process for investigating such claims.

The policy was approved during a special meeting Nov. 23 and is intended to replace the institution’s previous policy that dealt solely with sexual harassment. The new policy states:

“The University will vigorously enforce its prohibition against harassment based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, disability or handicap, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other unlawful basis, and encourages those within the University community, as well as third parties who feel aggrieved to seek assistance to rectify the problems.”

“This policy provides an overarching framework through which we can appropriately address issues of unlawful harassment,” said James Sciarini, associate vice president of human resources. “The procedure outlines how someone who either experiences or observes harassment can report it with confidence that the allegation will be addressed.”

Sciarini added, “We established our procedures understanding the need to have multiple ways of reporting unlawful harassment, so students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community feel comfortable reporting a situation.”

Detailed information on the policy and procedures is available on the Human Resources Web page at www.hr.utoledo.edu.
