    Board Approves Summer Tuition Increase, Fact-Finder Reports
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Apr 3, 2002

    The University of Toledo board of trustees unanimously approved a 3.7 percent increase in tuition for summer 2002. The move comes in the aftermath of a 6 percent cut to the Ohio higher education budget, which translated into nearly $5.6 million in lost revenue for UT.

    The increase will raise tuition for summer $94 per semester. Ohio undergraduates would pay $5,291 annually, up from $5,103.

    President Dan Johnson said the move is necessary because the “failure of the state to fund higher education leaves us no realistic alternatives.”

    According to William Decatur, vice president for finance and administration, an additional increase is likely for fall; however, specific figures have yet to be finalized. The board plans to discuss details at its regular meeting, April 23 and 24.

    In addition to the tuition increase, the board also approved fact-finder reccomendations on faculty wages and health care. Specifically:
    ·A 3 percent increase in the base salary,
    retroactive to Aug. 21, 2001;
    ·A 1 percent merit pool effective Jan. 1, 2002; and
    ·A .5 percent equity pool to be administered by a
    joint committee of the board of trustees and The
    University of Toledo chapter of the American
    Association of University Professors (AAUP),
    effective Aug. 19.

    The fact-finder’s recommendations on health care are:
    · Employee choice between five health plans;
    · An increase or decrease in premiums, depending on the plan selected by the employee;
    · Co-pays for office visits to remain the same;
    · Drug co-pays of $4 for generics, $8 for formulary and $16 for non-formulary for the life of the contract;
    · Vision and dental plans to remain the same;
    · A strengthened role of the Benefits Committee; and
    · The development of a wellness plan by Dec. 31.

    The AAUP, the Communications Workers of America Local 4530, and The University of Toledo chapter of the Police Patrolman’s Association are currently holding informational meetings on the reports with voting to conclude April 5.
