The board of trustees has authorized $25,000 to go to the Toledo Charter Schools Council (TCSC) so the process of transferring oversight of University-authorized charter schools may begin.
In a unanimous vote, the board approved a resolution authorizing the negotiation of an agreement with the TCSC to become the University’s designee in looking after the seven UT-sponsored charter schools. The funding will come out of oversight fees collected from the schools.
Additionally, the board was updated on the passage of Substitute Senate Bill 364, the Community School Enhancement Act, which enables the University to transfer its oversight responsibility to another nonprofit body, with the consent of the school. The bill has passed the senate, with the house conference committee confirming.
“I think the vehicle is in place to move our agenda forward as we hoped it would be,” said President Dan Johnson.
Sandy Drabik, vice president and general counsel, told members that the transition will take a year to complete, and the board will likely need to take one final action at that time to complete the handing over of authority to the TCSC.
