Board approves final budget, several leaders say goodbye
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Jun 28, 2006

The final meeting of The University of Toledo Board of Trustees featured the approval of the Fiscal Year 07 budget, as well as some closing remarks from institutional leaders.

In his final report to the board, President Dan Johnson summed up the feelings of many, noting the importance of the changes that will take place in just days.

“All of us present this morning recognize the historic significance of this meeting of UT Board of Trustees,” said Johnson. “The next meeting of UT’s Board of Trustees will be different because the University will be different, much different. The difference will be so significant that many have described it in ways that surpass the change UT made when Governor Rhodes transformed us from being a municipal institution to a state university.”

Meanwhile, Johnson chose to look to the future, rather than revisiting past accomplishments.

“At historic times like this, we are often tempted to look back to see how far we have come, to reminisce about the good things that have happened, and to congratulate ourselves on our progress,” said Johnson. “I would urge us not to yield to this temptation but rather spend our limited and valuable time looking ahead, setting high goals and charting a strategic course that will enable us to achieve these goals and our larger mission.”

The meeting also marked the last for Daniel Brennan as a trustee and board chair.

Dr. Carter Wilson, chair of Faculty Senate, paid tribute to Brennan, thanking him for his “deep and genuine concern for The University of Toledo.”

“Don’t lose track, as the merger goes on,” said Brennan. “That the goal of student-centeredness doesn’t get pushed aside,” noting that students are at the core of everything at The University of Toledo.

The board also recognized Sandra Drabik, vice president and general counsel, who announced her retirement effective Sept. 29.

In other action, the board approved a $260.5 million operating budget.

    C. William Fall, chair of the finance committee, noted it continues support for the faculty hiring plan, which has brought 18 new research-focused faculty to the University since being implemented in FY 05. Two positions will roll over into the new fiscal year, while searches for 10 new positions will move forward this year.
