A pair of important contract negotiations officially came to a close April 30, as The University of Toledo Board of Trustees unanimously approved contract agreements with the UT Police Patrolman’s Association and the Communications Workers of America Local 4319.
“The board is very happy that we have unions and management coming together for a common cause,” said Richard Stansley, board chair. “They have worked together to improve quality of life, while recognizing the cost implications to the institution. This is an example of sacrifice for the common good.”
“These contracts reflect a great deal of effort and compromise,” said President Lloyd Jacobs, “but more importantly, they represent a new level of partnership between the administration and these unions.”
“This is proof-positive that we can achieve our goals using an interest-based approach to collective bargaining,” said Bill Logie, vice president for human resources and campus safety. “I’m proud of the leadership showcased on both sides of the bargaining table and appreciate the efforts of the negotiating teams.”
Among the terms of the three-year contracts:
• A dedicated employee clinic offering free health-care services effective in January;
• Annual incentives for wellness screening;
• Health-care plan design changes, including changes in pharmacy coverage that levels the playing field by having all full-time employees pay a flat 15 percent of health-care premiums; and
• A 5 percent wage increase in year one followed by 3 percent in years two and three, designed to help offset the increases in health-care premiums.
