National Science Foundation director to visit UT
    By Chris Ankney
    Oct 30, 2008

    Bement
Dr. Arden Bement, director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), will visit The University of Toledo for a public lecture Monday, Nov. 3.

As director, he oversees a budget of $6 billion, according to www.nsf.gov/od/. NSF is the only federal agency that funds research and education in all fields of science and engineering; that involves approximately 200,000 scientists, engineers, educators and students throughout the United States, including financial resources for scientific facilities and infrastructure.

While at UT, Bement will meet those in charge of various scientific and technological areas of campus as well as some of the 35 faculty and staff members who hold research and education grants from NSF.

Main Campus Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Rosemary Haggett, who held many positions at NSF, including acting director of the Division of Graduate Education prior to coming to UT, said she is excited to have Bement visit the University.

“Dr. Bement’s visit, I’m sure, will be invaluable to the scientific researchers and leaders on this campus,” Haggett said. “But the visit is also a great chance for him to see how we are putting the organization’s grants to work in our continuing support of scientific and technological research and education. We’re confident that he will be impressed by what he sees.”

Bement’s visit will culminate with a free, public lecture titled “Energy, Environment and Economy: Can Science Help?” Monday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in Memorial Field House Room 2100 on Main Campus. A reception will follow immediately and include a poster session highlighting UT’s NSF-funded research.

Dr. Nina McClelland, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said the visit and lecture are exciting for the college.

“The chance to have access to someone like Dr. Bement is an opportunity I hope our students and faculty don’t take for granted,” she said.

Bement, the foundation’s 12th director, has been in charge of NSF since 2004. Prior to NSF, he was the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and was the David A. Ross Distinguished Professor and head of School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University.

The visit and the lecture are part of the Leaders of the Global Scientific Community Lecture Series and are sponsored by the UT Department of Chemistry and a Program for Academic Excellence grant from the Main Campus Office of the Provost.

Public parking for the lecture will be available in Lot 13 and the West Parking Ramp, located west of the Memorial Field House.

For more information about Bement’s visit or free, public lecture, contact the Chemistry Department at 419.530.7902.
