Provost announces Learning Collaborative leadership; outlines purpose, structure
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Jul 22, 2008

It has been talked about for years and it has been referred to many ways. At one time it was loosely discussed as a portal of entry. Later it was simply known as New Entity. Now it can be called a reality.

Dr. Rosemary Haggett, Main Campus provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, has announced leadership and structural detail for the new University of Toledo Learning Collaborative (UTLC).

“The Learning Collaborative is a newly conceived home for empowering student success, evolving the ‘college’ model into one that couples together services and programs designed to enrich the undergraduate experience for all students,” Haggett said. “Philosophically, what we’re creating in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs is a vehicle for enriching a student’s academic journey.”

The UTLC will be housed primarily in Rocket Hall and will come into being Aug. 18.

Margaret Traband, professor of respiratory care and associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Health Science and Human Service, has accepted the role of interim executive director of The University of Toledo Learning Collaborative and vice provost.

“Peg brings a wealth of experience to the UTLC,” Haggett said. “Her experience with the University and passion for students made her an ideal choice for this important role.”

“This is an incredible opportunity for UT to create a distinctive model that supports student learning, while keeping the focus on the individual student and his or her success,” Traband said. “I’m honored to help launch this exciting new academic area.”

Dr. Dennis Lettman, interim dean of University College, will take on a permanent role as dean of University College degree programs.

“The degree offerings of University College will be a part of the UTLC,” Haggett said. “We felt this programmatic component was essential for sustaining this model.”

The UTLC will have five primary areas of focus: gateway programs, student success and retention initiatives, academic enrichment, University College degree programs, and academic and customer service solutions.

“Basically, we have pulled together our ‘get you in the door’ areas, our ‘help to keep you here’ areas, our experiential learning opportunities and current University College degree offerings,” Haggett said.

“You might say this is a way of ‘operationalizing’ some of what President Jacobs outlined in his April address to the community,” Haggett said. “However, those concepts have evolved significantly. It is an outgrowth of our strategic plan as well as the ongoing work of a faculty-driven committee that is examining our overall undergraduate student experience.

“While the UTLC will be a place where students will find components for a more customizable approach to education,” Haggett added, “it will happen by supplementing required course work in a major, minor or degree program, not by usurping it.”

“The Learning Collaborative is symbolic of our institutional focus on student success in the context of the ‘academic journey,’” said Dr. Kaye Patten Wallace, vice president for student affairs. “Some areas that were previously a part of Student Affairs are now a part of the UTLC, and it only made sense as we were looking to create a structure that would look at a student’s education in total.”
