Rockets to host Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational in September
    By Steve Easton
    Jul 16, 2008

The best teams in men’s collegiate golf will be headed to northwest Ohio this fall when The University of Toledo and the Inverness Club host the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational.

The 54-hole tournament will be played Sept. 28-30 at Inverness and will consist of 18 holes each day with a practice round set for Sept. 27.

Reigning NCAA champion UCLA will headline the 15-team field for the event. The Bruins captured their first national title since 1988 to edge Stanford by one stroke and Southern Cal by two strokes on the Kampen Course at Purdue’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

Also competing in the field will be Georgia, the No. 1-ranked team in last year’s Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

The remainder of the tournament field will be Alabama, Arizona State, Charlotte, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kent State, Oklahoma State, Southern Cal, Stanford, Tennessee and UT.

“We are very excited to be hosting the preview and having the chance to compete against the nation’s top golf programs,” Toledo Head Coach Jamie Mauntler said. “It’s going to be a challenge for us, but it will be a tremendous opportunity to be a part of three great days of golf.”

The tournament will serve as a preview of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship that will be held at Inverness May 27-30.  Charlotte won the 2007 tournament before tying for eighth place at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
