    UT Alumni Association to recognize grads at Homecoming Gala

    The University of Toledo Alumni Association will present this year’s Blue T, Gold T and the Edward H. Schmidt Outstanding Alum awards during the Homecoming Gala Friday, Oct. 7.

    Patricia Scharf, Toledo, is the recipient of the Blue T Award, which is presented to a UT Alumni Association member who has made outstanding contributions to the progress and development of the association and University. She graduated from UT in 1956, 1962 and 1975 in education. The retired educator has been an active supporter of the Alumni Association and the University, having served as a member of the Alumni Association board of trustees and its president in 2001. She is a member of the UT board of trustees academic affairs committee, President’s Club and state of Ohio Board of Optometry. She is a former chair of Bethany House and a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo. An educator for more than 30 years, Scharf retired in 1998 as principal of Libbey High School.

    John Neff
    John Neff, Berwyn, Pa., will be honored with the Gold T Award, which is given to a UT alum in recognition of outstanding achievement in his or her field while providing leadership and noteworthy service to the community. A 1955 business graduate, he was recognized by Fortune magazine as one of 10 outstanding investors of the 20th century. For more than 30 years he managed Vanguard’s Windsor Fund, which grew to become the largest mutual fund in the United States. A legend in worldwide financial markets, Neff beat the market 22 of his 31 years with the Windsor Fund, steering the fund to a cumulative total return of 5546.4 percent. Last year, the Neff Financial Trading Floor opened in the College of Business, which gives students access to live and delayed feeds from the world’s stock exchanges. Neff and his wife, Lilly, have donated more that $1.4 million to The University of Toledo.

    J. Robert Shindell
    J. Robert Shindell, Lubbock, Texas, a 1995 UT education graduate, will receive the Edward H. Schmidt Outstanding Young Alum Award, which recognizes someone 35 years or younger with outstanding achievement in his or her field, while providing leadership and noteworthy service to the Alumni Association, University or community. He works at Texas Tech University, where he serves as director of the Career Management Center for the Rawls College of Business Administration. He is active with Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, serving as a member of its National Council. He also has helped to raise more than $14,000 to support PUSH America, the national philanthropy of his fraternity. Shindell is pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education administration at Texas Tech.

    The recipients will be introduced during halftime of the UT-Eastern Michigan football game Saturday night.
