The best and the brightest at Owens Community College now will be able to quickly and easily join their peers at The University of Toledo thanks to the seamless transition agreement between their respective honors programs officials signed July 14.

| Dr. Rosemary Haggett, UT provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and Dr. Paul Unger, Owens executive vice president and provost, signed an agreement so Owens honors students can transfer into UT’s Honors Program. On hand for the signing were, from left, Dr. Tom Barden, UT professor of English and director of the Honors Program; Kathleen Attwood, Owens chair of international studies, communications and humanities and co-chair of the Honors Program Committee; and Reed Knowles, Owens associate professor of design technologies and professor in the Honors Program. |
This collaboration is the newest in an increasing number of cooperative agreements between UT and Owens. On July 15, members of the UT administration and Board of Trustees met with senior leaders and trustees at Owens, discussed many of the ongoing partnerships, and committed to searching for more opportunities like the Honors Program agreement.
Owens students will need to maintain a 3.5 grade point average and complete an agreed-upon honors curriculum. Graduates with associate degrees then will meet with UT Honors Program advisers to identify an honors course of study consistent with the students’ majors as they pursue bachelor’s degrees at the University.
“This agreement will encourage some of the most talented and high-achieving students at Owens Community College to come to The University of Toledo to complete a bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Tom Barden, professor of English and director of the UT Honors Program.
According to Barden, UT is planning to initiate coordinated activities and programming to get the Owens Honors Program students on UT’s Main Campus and into the Honors building, Sullivan Hall, even before they come to the University.
“It’s important to us that they feel like full-fledged members of our Honors Program community when they arrive in their junior year,” Barden said.
“Owens Community College and The University of Toledo are committed to serving our students by opening new doors to higher education through innovative partnerships,” said Dr. Paul Unger, Owens executive vice president and provost. “The new Honors Program articulation agreement provides a unique opportunity for students to receive intellectual growth and educational attainment at the highest level from the two outstanding academic institutions.”
“Over the years the data have been quite clear that students who transfer to UT after they complete associate’s degrees at Owens are among the most productive and most likely to graduate,” said Dr. Rosemary Haggett, UT provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.
Other collaborations between UT and Owens include the areas of purchasing, student health care and additional academic articulation agreements.
Leaders from both schools also discussed the state’s strategic plan for higher education and ways UT and Owens can work together to achieve established goals.
