UT trustees meeting touches on undergrad experience, budget, Arts and Sciences
    By Jon Strunk
    May 12, 2008

University of Toledo Provost Rosemary Haggett gave an overview of progress in the University’s efforts to re-engineer the undergraduate experience at a May 12 Board of Trustees meeting. The buzz-generating “New Entity” was officially rechristened the University of Toledo Learning Collaborative and will move into space in Rocket Hall.

Among the progress made, Haggett highlighted the successful implementation of moving about 100 conditionally admitted students into the Learning Collaborative while canceling out any unintended negative effects caused by the new policy, such as ensuring students are held harmless in terms of financial aid.

Meanwhile, having completed extensive conversations with UT constituents, the University is just beginning the decision-making process regarding the fiscal year 2009 budget.

Dr. Scott Scarborough, senior vice president of finance and administration, said conversation had already begun with administrative and faculty Senate leaders and would continue for about a month — ultimately ending with a draft budget for the trustees’ review.

UT President Lloyd Jacobs told trustees of a May 9 meeting with the leadership of the Arts and Sciences Council scheduled to discuss the leadership of the college following an April vote of no confidence in Dean Dr. Yeuh-Ting Lee.

“Let me be clear, I certainly take seriously faculty concerns about any administrator or about policies and procedures that affect faculty,” Jacobs said. “However, there should be no rush to judgment.”

Jacobs said Haggett was working with Lee to address the concerns raised by faculty and told trustees he was planning to bring in an external reviewer to evaluate the college and the dean.

“This seems to me an entirely appropriate step that is often used by higher education. There is some cost, but the cost is minimal in relation to the importance of the issue, whether it is the future direction of the college or the fate of its dean,” he said.

Trustee Dr. S. Amjad Hussain commended the suggestion of an external reviewer, saying an objective view by a third party would be beneficial.

    The board also:

    •    Discussed and approved ongoing joint commission safety and health evaluations. The Joint Commission, the accrediting body for hospitals across the nation, is expected to make an unannounced site visit to The University of Toledo Medical Center at any time.

    •    Approved tuition and fees for the next academic year. Undergraduate tuition and general fees were held at current levels per the state’s budget calling for a two-year undergraduate tuition freeze.

    •    Reviewed economic development efforts for the southwest and northeast corners of Main Campus.

    •    Appointed a committee, to be chaired by Trustee John Szuch, to nominate candidates for board officer positions beginning in the next fiscal year.
