The University of Toledo department of physics and astronomy is holding its annual Physics Summer Camp this week.
The camp is for local high school sophomores, juniors, seniors and science teachers and is taught by UT faculty and students. Toledo area scientists and inventors also are giving presentations.
Each day of activities on campus is planned according to a theme. This year, there are days dedicated to sports, music, astronomy, industries and low temperatures.
According to Dr. Rosa Lukaszew, UT assistant professor of physics, the camp is a way to promote science awareness and education to high school students. She said this purpose stems from a decline of interest in the natural sciences and mathematics among American students.
“Physics is fun,” Lukaszew said. “The sciences are not hard if you know how to approach them.”
The camp will try to break down physics into understandable terms using experiments and presentations that make science less intimidating. One experiment will involve the analysis of trajectories using a series of pictures of a ball being thrown. Another experiment will include the use of musical instruments. Campers can even look forward to making ice cream with liquid nitrogen on low-temperature day.
