National Institutes of Health Award Contract to College of Pharmacy
    By Heather Van Doren
    Jan 16, 2004

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through Case Western Reserve University, has awarded The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy a $51,799 contract titled, “Development of a Molecular Library: Identification of Compounds for the Brain Institutes Bioactive Compound Collection.”

Dr. William Messer, professor and chair of pharmacology, will lead the development of the compound library with a team of UT researchers. The team includes Dr. Peter Nagy, research professor of medicinal chemistry; Dr. Frederick Tejada, a postdoctoral fellow in the pharmacology department; and Min Xu, a graduate student enrolled in the master’s program in pharmaceutical sciences.

The UT research group will help identify small molecules for inclusion in the NIH Brain Institutes Bioactive Compound Collection. The development of the molecular libraries represents a major component of the “Roadmap Initiative” recently announced by Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, NIH director.

“The collection of compounds will be made available to researchers studying biochemical pathways related to neurological disorders,” Messer said. “The overall goal is to speed up the process for identifying new treatments for neurological disorders.”
