Biking community to hold meeting July 15
    By Jacob Corkins
    Jul 10, 2008

The first meeting of The University of Toledo bicycling community will be Tuesday, July 15, from noon to 1 p.m. in the International House Cafeteria Meeting Room on Main Campus.

The community will operate as a social networking place where bikers can talk about gear, equipment, safer routes to work and vacation bike touring, according to Diana Sharp, secretary in the College of Law's Legal Clinic and the program’s founder.

“The community will be membership-driven; it’s going to be what people want to do,” she said.

Sharp said that riding her bike to work for three summers made her think, “I can’t be the only one who does this and I was right!”

About 25 people have shown interest in the community, with some biking to UT from as far away as Monclova.

The group also will keep a collective tally of the gallons of gas saved by deciding not to drive to work every day. They also plan to use public transportation and carpooling as alternatives to getting to UT during the winter.

With her daily four-mile bike ride, Sharp said she saves a bit of gas each week.

For a few reasons to ride your bike to work, visit www.biketraffic.org/btwg/whyemployees.htm.

If you plan on stopping by the meeting because you want to save a few bucks this summer or would like more information on the free program, contact Sharp at Diana.Sharp@utoledo.edu.
