The University of Toledo Board of Trustees will take portions of what is being called the “penultimate draft” strategic plan under consideration when it meets in January.
The document is the result of months of work by the Executive Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Gold, executive vice president and provost for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, and Dr. Tom Gutteridge, dean of the College of Business Administration.
The mission, core values and vision sections will be submitted for board approval, while additional consideration is given to the rest of the document.
“I would like you to take some time over the holidays to consider this document,” President Lloyd Jacobs asked of the board. “It is my intention to spend some additional time with the plan before we move forward to adoption.”
Upon completion, the administration will move into an implementation mode, keeping the board aware of its efforts.
“The two co-chairs are to be commended,” Jacobs told the board. His sentiments were echoed by Olivia Summons, one of the trustees that participated on the Executive Strategic Planning Committee.
“Under the leadership of Jeff Gold and Tom Gutteridge, they had a mammoth task,” Summons said.
“There was a lot of thought, a lot of late nights and a lot of congeniality that went into this document,” Summons said.
Jacobs also expressed gratitude to a group that took it upon themselves to write an alternate draft.
“A group of people, five of them, seized the leadership moment to create another iteration,” Jacobs said. “It was really the turning point.”
The group was composed of Dr. Carol Bresnahan, vice provost for academic programs, Sue Ott Rowlands, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Kaye Patten Wallace, vice president for student affairs, Dr. Penny Poplin Gosetti, executive assistant to the president, and Dr. Mary Jo Waldock, interim dean of University College.
