Breast cancer survivor to speak at UT Oct. 10
    By Krista M. Hayes
    Oct 9, 2006

American Cancer Society statistics show that about 212,920 women in the United States will discover they have invasive breast cancer in 2006. About 40,970 women will die from the disease this year. Right now there are slightly more than 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The University of Toledo’s Office of Student Activities and Leadership will host a lecture by Lori Nistel, a local breast cancer survivor, on Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Ingman Room on Main Campus.

Nistel will speak about her personal journey with breast cancer. She was diagnosed with the disease at age 39 and will be a 10-year survivor in November. Nistel also will talk about the Check-It-Out Breast Cancer Awareness Program, in which she educates area junior and senior high school female students about breast cancer awareness and the correct way to perform breast self-examinations.

“It is important to get the word out that early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer along with knowing to look for any changes in your body,” Nistel said.

She thinks having October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month is helpful. “It is a time where you can really focus on the issue,” Nistel said. “If you have a lot of information being thrown your way within a relatively short time frame, hopefully some of it will stay with you.”

For a list of other events that the UT Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women will host to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, go to www.womenscenter.utoledo.edu.

For more information on Nistel’s free, public lecture, contact Ricardo Reddick, UT assistant director of student activities administration, at 419.530.7221 or at ricardo.reddick@utoledo.edu.
