The faculty and staff campaign, part of the overall the Time is Now campaign, has inspired UT Police Officer Jeni Gerber to establish the Children’s Cheer Fund at the UT Foundation.
 |
| UT Police Officer Jeni Gerber and Dr. David Krol, associate professor and chair of pediatrics, posed for a photo after talking about the fund she established to help comfort young patients. |
All donations to the fund will be used to purchase teddy bears, books, crayons and coloring books, and to build and maintain play areas at UTMC to benefit pediatric patients.
During the holiday season last year, Gerber worked with the UTMC Satellites auxiliary to temporarily provide funding to purchase teddy bears to be given to pediatric patients. As Gerber was filling out her pledge card for the faculty and staff campaign, she realized this was the perfect opportunity to establish a permanent way to fund the bears and other items to make the hospital more kid friendly.
“The bears have been a big hit. They help make the hospital surroundings less traumatizing to our young patients,” Gerber said. “The Satellites were so generous to provide funds to purchase bears this past year and I am very grateful to them, but I wanted to make this a permanent service that UTMC can provide to our young patients.”
