The merger of the Main Campus’ Safety and Risk Management area with Safety Services on the Health Science Campus has led to some significant changes designed to reduce on-the-job injuries while streamlining operations.
According to Bill Logie, vice president for administration, the risk management and workers compensation functions from the Main Campus will join those on the Health Science Campus, with Tom Claire, administrator for liability, leading the effort.
Meanwhile, University Safety Services will grow to encompass both the Main and Health Science campuses. Gary Jankowski, director of safety services, will provide leadership as the University strives to greatly reduce the number of on-the-job injuries; particularly those that bring with them reduced productivity and absence.
“You may not realize that the Main Campus has experienced a large increase in job-related injuries during the last 18 months,” Logie said. “In fact, these types of injuries have doubled. You also may not realize the significant financial impact these situations have on the institution, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Jankowski’s leadership team will include Mike Valigosky, manager of occupational safety and health, and Heather Lorenz, manager of environmental safety and health.
“My charge to this team is to find ways to reverse this trend and show us all how an ounce of prevention can have a dramatic impact in our daily work,” Logie said. We must all stay alert and safe on the job, and this group will play a leadership role in promoting that message.”
