    Cinema Arts Series continues
    By Megan Lewis
    Nov 12, 2008

The Cinema Arts Series will screen “The Burmese Harp” Wednesday, Nov. 12, and “Heavy Metal in Baghdad” Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Sullivan Hall Room 2010 on Main Campus.

“The Burmese Harp” was nominated for a 1957 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the 1957 Mainichi Film Concours for Best Film Score.

In the film, Private Mizushima, a Japanese soldier, is assigned to convince a Burmese unit of Japanese soldiers to surrender during the final days of World War II. When he is unsuccessful, the unit is attacked and wiped out with the exception of Mizushima, who is nursed back to health by a Buddhist monk. Mizushima is then transformed from a soldier to a holy man.

“Heavy Metal in Bagdad” is a documentary about Iraq's only heavy metal band called Acrassicauda. The story begins in 2003, when MTV discovered Acrassicauda while covering the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship.

The film shows how the band members’ lives are distorted and displaced by years of continual warfare in their homeland. The filmmakers document the struggles of the band as it tries to stay together and stay alive.

After the screenings, a discussion of the films’ merits and messages will be held.
