College of Medicine offers summer research opportunities for medical students
    By Jim Winkler
    Jan 31, 2007

The UT College of Medicine again is sponsoring a program for first-year medical students interested in gaining research experience with a Health Science Campus faculty investigator during its 10-week Medical Student Summer Research Program.

Students will receive a $3,500 stipend for 10 weeks of full-time research conducted during a 14-week summer period between May 14 and Aug. 17. Principal investigators are responsible for 25 percent of the stipend — $875.

Interested faculty members must submit by Feb. 9 an application for peer review by the Medical Student Research Committee to the Center for Clinical Research, Suite 3105, Center for Creative Education. The committee will review applications to determine if they are appropriate for medical students. The applications also will be reviewed by Research and Grants Administration and the Department of Human Research Protections. Applications must outline the students’ roles and responsibilities in the projects, and students must be in good academic standing to participate.

Faculty members and students will be required to submit evaluations of the experience, and students will give talks about their experiences at a symposium in the fall.

More information about the program can be obtained by calling Dr. Sandra Puczynski, Center for Clinical Research director and Medical Student Research Committee chair, at 419.383.6919, or Dr. Patricia Metting, vice provost for student affairs on the Health Science Campus and College of Medicine associate dean for student affairs, at 419.383.5452.
