College of Medicine faculty and staff members and students were honored May 31 at the annual Graduation Awards Ceremony.
Six faculty members received Robert T. Tidrick Golden Apple awards for teaching excellence in the basic and clinical sciences. The award honors the late surgeon who was an outstanding educator at the former Medical College of Ohio. Members of the graduating class select the recipients.
Basic science award winners were Drs. Carol Bennett-Clarke, associate professor of neurosciences; Maurice Manning, professor of biochemistry and cancer biology; and Richard Yeasting, professor of neurosciences.
The clinical sciences winners were three Department of Neurology faculty members — Drs. Imran I. Ali, professor and assistant dean for clinical undergraduate medical education; Lawrence W. Elmer, associate professor and medical director of the Center for Neurological Disorders; and Noor Pirzada, professor and director of the neurology residency training program.
Ali and medical graduate Dr. Mary T. LaSalvia received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a New Jersey-based foundation that works to promote humanism in medicine. LaSalvia won the college’s two most prestigious academic awards, the Glidden L. Brooks Award and the Dean’s Award for the Doctor of Medicine Program.
Della Croci, Kathy Kaczmarek and Diane Pfaff received Outstanding Student Services Staff Awards; Drs. Mario Castillo-Sang and Fadi Daher, Outstanding Resident Award; and Maggie Lienhardt, who works in the Department of Family Medicine, Outstanding Clerkship Coordinator Award.
In addition, College of Medicine academic departments presented awards to outstanding students, and members of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor and Gold Humanism Honor societies were recognized.
