College of Nursing Research Day to be held April 23
    By Stacy Moeller
    Apr 20, 2007

Calling all nurses — research day is here!

The University of Toledo College of Nursing will hold its research day Monday, April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Toledo Hilton Dana Center Lucas Auditorium on the Health Science Campus.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Lorraine C. Mion from the MetroHealth Medical Center and Dr. Harriet Coeling from Kent State University.

Mion will speak at 8:45 a.m. about “Making a Difference Through Research: The Case of Physical Restraints.” At the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the process leading to clinical research that impacts nursing practice and patient outcomes, using an exemplar of physical restraints in hospital settings.

Coeling will present at 1:15 p.m. on “Ready, Set, Go for the Gold: Better Patient Care Through Research.” Participants will describe the process of developing a research program and the rewards of improving patient care through research.

Other topics to be covered include effectiveness of inpatient nurse-directed smoking cessation, information needs of caregivers of persons with dementia, and women’s internal readiness and capabilities for self-care operations.

“Nursing research focuses on individual or group responses to health concerns,” said Dr. Jane Ransom, UT associate professor in the College of Nursing. “We are concerned with what kinds of interventions foster improved health, facilitate individuals in coping with heavy care-giving roles for family members, support quality of life in living with chronic health problems, or support end-of-life choices.

She added, “For the research day, faculty and students are excited to share what we have been doing and hope to network with our nurse colleagues for future endeavors.”

The event is sponsored by the Sigma Theta Tau International Toledo Chapter-at-Large and the College of Nursing Center for Continuing Nursing Education.

Continuing Nursing Education Contact Hours will be awarded for each individual research presentation participants attend.

A box lunch will be available from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. for $5.

In the spirit of research, the Sigma Theta Tau Chapter-at-Large has donated 10 $50 gift certificates redeemable at The University of Toledo Bookstore. There will be two drawings for students only.

For more information on the event, contact Ransom at 419.383.5844 or jane.ransom@utoledo.edu.
