UT launches Jefferson Awards recognition program, Web page
    By Kim Harvey
    Dec 15, 2008

Keeping with UT’s mission of “improving the human condition,” the University has partnered with the national Jefferson Awards program to recognize exemplary community service.

As a “Champion” partner with the Jefferson Awards, UT will honor one member of its community each month for volunteer efforts on behalf of individuals, organizations and communities. Each honoree will receive a prestigious Jefferson Awards medallion, recognition in University publications and eligibility for a national Jefferson Award.

UT’s first honorees will be named in February.

“This collaboration with the Jefferson Awards is part of what we as a University are trying to achieve as a true community partner,” said Lawrence J. Burns, vice president for external affairs. “Not only will this program expand existing service opportunities, but it will open the door for additional volunteer opportunities, as well.”

An interactive Web page detailing UT’s partnership with the Jefferson Awards will be launched on the University’s myUT site Monday, Dec. 15. Users can learn about both UT’s recognition program and the national Jefferson Awards, view ongoing volunteer opportunities, and submit nominations for monthly Jefferson Award winners. The format will include videos, a bulletin board of volunteer opportunities and more user-friendly features.

Nominations can be submitted online through UT’s Jefferson Awards page.

“We know there are many worthy people within our community who deserve recognition,” Burns noted. “We’ve made the nomination process as simple as possible. There are a few boxes to complete and a brief nomination summary that can be typed and submitted entirely through our Web page.”

UT’s Jefferson Awards Web page can be viewed directly at www.utoledo.edu/utcommcenter/jeffersonaward.

Nominations for February’s first Jefferson Awards winner are due by Monday, Jan. 19. The honoree will be announced in early February. The awards are open to UT faculty members, employees and students.
