Readings to address violence against women
    By Shannon Wermer
    Mar 17, 2008

Issues relating to violence against women will be presented in Rocky’s Attic in the Student Union on The University of Toledo’s Main Campus Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m.

UT men and women will perform readings from Eve Ensler's anthology, A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer: Writings to Stop Violence Against Women and Girls (2007).

Ensler, a feminist best known for the play “The Vagina Monologues,” and Mollie Doyle collected writings from the Until the Violence Stops Festival for A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer. Contributors include Edward Albee, Maya Angelou, Jane Fonda, Kathy Najimy and Alice Walker.

Joyce Kennedy, a sophomore majoring in political science, will participate in the readings.
According to Diane Docis, coordinator of the UT Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program, this special event presents a diversity of voices creatively addressing the issue of violence against women. Some of the pieces are encouraging, others are harrowing, and some have an element of humor, Docis said. She hopes that the program encourages audience members to listen to the stories and leave thinking about what they can do in their own lives to take a stand against violence.

Participants will include Dr. Celia Williamson, UT associate professor of social work; UT Senior Law Enforcement Officer Tressa Johnson; CeCe Norwood, community member; and UT students Lisa Fedina, Cherrise Gayle, Amanda Hill, Cherrise Hill, Joyce Kennedy, Paige Knight, Keris Lee, Leia' Love, Chelsea McGinnis, Jennifer Page, Ajani Oden and Laura Schumm.

Sponsors for the event are the Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program; Office of Multicultural Student Services; Student Social Work Organization; Women’s and Gender Studies Department; Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women; and Power of Women.

Refreshments will be provided during the free event. Audience members may enter a drawing to win free copies of the book.
